Earlier versions of some portions of Chapters 3 and 5 first appeared in the journal Between the Species and in the anthology Canadian Issues in Environmental Ethics. I am grateful to the editors of these publications for encouraging me to write for them, and to the Schweitzer Center of the San Francisco Bay Institute/Congress of Cultures and Broadview Press for allowing me to draw upon these sources. Some of the material in Chapters 5 and 7 was presented at a workshop on "The Ethics of Human Health and Ecosystem Health: Toward an Inclusive Understanding," held at McMaster University in October 1998.
